Not even Dionne Warwick and her mind-reading friends could have predicted that, over the course of two CDs, Destiny's Child would become one of the most successful girl groups on the planet. But successful this Houston trio is, and their sophomore CD shows why. Yes, the lineup changes as often as lead singer Beyoncé's hairstyle, but fun, disposable pop/R&B needn't be rooted in permanence, and DC is mad fun and mad catchy to boot. With the assistance of hitmakers Shek'spere and Kandi Burruss, Destiny's Child trade in effervescent, hip-shaking, finger-wagging, 'you-go-girl, kick-him-to-the-curb' anthems. The Writing's on the Wall is loaded with tracks like "Bills, Bills, Bills," which are suitable both for dancing and as topics on the Ricki Lake Show. The percolating "Bug A Boo" is irresistible, as is the sassy "So Good." To their credit, the girls can slow the pace down, and on the sultry "Temptation" they get to work their considerable chops to nice effect. But as sales and chart figures have shown, Destiny's Child are at their best when they are laying down the law to some trifling man, and/or working their own groove thang. Work it they do on this somewhat formulaic but ultimately irresistible effort. --Amy Linden
I am a moderate fan of Beyonce and Destiny's Child. I had the Destiny Fulfilled album and the "Independent Women" single so I thought I would finally listen to the album that made DC a big name and is considered by most to be their best album. Now that have, I am so unimpressed. I find it hard to believe this album sold over 8 million copies and produced 2 #1 singles. Granted it's been over a decade since it's release, but that whole concept about the commandments just gets to be really annoying. Especially ones like "Thou shall get your party on" just sound rediculous. Even more rediculous is the track "Sweet Sixteen" in which a young girl is being told "You're only 16, there's so much more ahead, You're moving way too fast" etc. This wise advise loses a lot of credibility considering it's being sung by a seventeen year old. (Beyonce was born in Sept '81.) All in all it's not a terrible album but not nearly as good as I was expecting. Maybe I am just 10 years too late in listening to it, but good music should be timeless.
For starters, this album was special to me before I even heard it because it was released on my 20th birthday (July 27). When I did listen to it, I fell in luv with it! I mean, I can literally listen to this disc from start to finish. I'm actually at work listening 2 it now. I really wish LeToya and Latavia could've been showcased as lead vocalists on some songs. If I had 2 choose my favorite song......it'd be "Hey Ladies." Kandi and Shakespeare's sound was so futuristic and so unique. I would've liked them to be like Missy and Timbaland. If you don't have this album, cop it....please. This should be in all R&B collections. I also wish Beyoncé's sophomore and junior discs were as good as this album.
and had a fallen out. this was the last cd recorded with the original two members in the group. this is my first review since the new year started. i listen to this cd the first time, only the singles had stand out for me so i actually found this cd a tad bit overrated. some of the songs have weak lyrics. i listen to it again, and the songs did grew on me. i still think survivor album has the stronger songs, but this album is good. the theme of this album is all from a female's perspective. i like how they came up with their own "commandments" to follow. the album cover looks hot. they look totally fierce. the intro was really interesting..just hearing them attempting to sound italian.
1. SO GOOD (5/5)-it's nice to know how they feel good in this song. beyonce's vocals sounded really "good".
2. BILLS, BILLS, BILLS (5/5)- catchy, fun lyrics. tells how men won't put any input in the relationship. i liked how the video took place at the hair salon. it was like they were having their own girl talk.
3. CONFESSIONS (4/5)- like the background beats. lyrics could have been better. don't hear much of missy.
4. BUG A BOO (4.5/5)-in this song, they sing really fast so you have to really listen to it closely
5. TEMPTATION (4/5)- nice song. sounds similar to beyonce's "yes".
6. NOW THAT'S SHE'S GONE (5/5)- very sensual. i like the last part.
7. WHERE'D YOU GO (5/5)-love the beats...they just flow really well
8. HEY LADIES (4.5/5)- nice
9. IF YOU LEAVE (4.5/5)- it's a really great duet, wish it didn't have to be so repetitive
10. JUMPIN, JUMPIN (5/5)- this was my jam back then. i love this song!!! great song to chill with your girls.
11. SAY MY NAME (5/5)- most overplayed song of 2000. this is like their signature song. it's been well known.
12. SHE CAN'T LOVE YOU (3.5/5)- not really my favorite, but it sounds laidback and relaxing
13. STAY (5/5)- BEST ballad on the album!!! definately one of my favorites!!!!
14. SWEET 16 (4/5)- good song. average lyrics.
15. OUTRO (5/5)-simply beautiful
The CD is in perfect working condition with little to no scratches and arrived quickly.
